WATCH: STR Steps Into the Vada Chennai Universe with Vetri Maaran’s “Arasan”

The much-awaited first look of Arasan, the latest addition to Vetri Maaran’s Vada Chennai universe, has finally been unveiled — both in theatres across Tamil Nadu and on YouTube. Directed and written by Vetri Maaran, the film stars Silambarasan TR in a commanding dual-timeline role.

In classic Vada Chennai fashion, Arasan unfolds across two eras — Silambarasan plays a younger version of his character full of swagger, and an older version, marked by wisdom and weariness. In a gripping courtroom sequence, the aged Arasan faces trial for three murders and recounts his life story to director Nelson. In a meta twist, he urges Nelson to turn his story into a movie — and even suggests casting Dhanush as the lead. The teaser closes with the words: “An untold tale from the world of Vada Chennai.”

This film marks a major first: the collaboration between Vetri Maaran and music maestro Anirudh Ravichander, whose powerful score adds a fresh edge to the gritty world of Arasan. Produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under his V Creations banner, the film brings together some of Tamil cinema’s biggest creative forces.

Interestingly, Silambarasan was originally considered for the lead role in Vada Chennai (2018) before Dhanush ultimately played Anbu, the carrom player-turned-gangster. Now, with Arasan, STR officially enters the universe he almost began.
