Microsoft has promoted Judson Althoff, its executive vice president and chief commercial officer, to the role of CEO of its commercial business, The Verge reported. The move comes as CEO Satya Nadella shifts his focus to the company’s AI-driven technical innovations, signaling a major restructuring at the tech giant.
Althoff, who has led Microsoft’s global sales organization for nearly a decade, will now oversee sales, marketing, and operations teams, while engineering teams will continue to report directly to Nadella. This change aims to streamline Microsoft’s approach to customer needs and strengthen its position as a key partner in AI transformation.
In an internal memo, Nadella explained that the reorganization will allow engineering leaders to focus on high-priority technical work, including AI research, data center expansion, systems architecture, and product innovation. “This isn’t just evolution, it’s reinvention—for each of us professionally and for Microsoft,” he wrote.
The move also reflects Microsoft’s trend of appointing CEOs to lead major business units, such as Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer and Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman. With Althoff now in charge of the company’s commercial operations, Nadella can concentrate on advancing Microsoft’s AI strategy while ensuring the company remains agile in an era of rapid technological change.
