Newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill has praised the experience and impact of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as India prepares for their white-ball tour of Australia.
Gill, who recently took over the one-day reins, said the duo’s presence would be vital as India builds toward the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
“The experience the two of them have is immense,” Gill said. “There are very few players in the world who can match the number of matches they’ve won for India, along with their skill and quality.”
Both Rohit and Kohli will return to ODIs for the first time since India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. The pair were in top form during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, finishing as India’s leading run-getters.
Having succeeded Rohit as captain, Gill said he hopes to emulate his senior’s calm leadership. “So many qualities that I’ve inherited from Rohit bhai – especially his composure and bond with the team – are things I aspire to,” he added.
India’s ODI series against Australia begins on October 19 in Perth, marking Gill’s first major assignment as skipper.
