Shubman Gill has officially been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, for the upcoming three-match series against Australia starting October 19. The young opener will lead the side in what marks a new phase for Indian cricket’s 50-over format.
Gill, who impressed during the ICC World Test Championship series against England – finishing as the top scorer with 754 runs at an average of 75.40 – will now take charge in the white-ball arena.
Meanwhile, senior pros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to return to international cricket for the first time since March. The duo, who recently announced their retirements from T20I and Test formats, will bolster India’s batting lineup ahead of the next ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027.
Notably missing from the squad are Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakaravarthy, while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant remain sidelined due to injuries. Mohammed Siraj makes a return, while Nitish Kumar Reddy earns a place in both ODI and T20I squads.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Jadeja’s omission was based on balance. “Taking two left-arm spinners to Australia isn’t practical at the moment. Jadeja remains in our plans, but Washington and Kuldeep provide better balance for these conditions,” he said.
