In the 2025 Asia Cup, the Sri Lankan team has qualified for the Super 4 stage with an outstanding performance. On Thursday, September 18, in the Group B match held at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets.
Chasing Afghanistan’s target of 170 runs, Sri Lanka achieved it in just 18.4 overs. In this chase, Kusal Mendis starred with a brilliant 74 runs. With this win, Sri Lanka finished the Group B stage as champions with three victories.
Meanwhile, Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan team ended third in the points table and was eliminated from the tournament. This win was crucial for them; had they won, they would have overtaken Bangladesh to advance to the Super 4. However, due to the loss, Bangladesh (2 wins in 3 matches) advanced alongside Sri Lanka.
In bowling, Nuwan Thushara played exceptionally, taking 4 wickets for just 18 runs in 4 overs.
The first Super 4 match will see Sri Lanka face Bangladesh in Dubai on Saturday, September 20.
From Group A, India and Pakistan have already qualified. However, the group topper will be decided in India’s final league match. If India defeats Oman on September 19, they will secure the top spot in Group A, setting up an India–Pakistan clash on September 21. India will also face Bangladesh (September 24) and Sri Lanka (September 26) in Dubai.
