Vijay Takes on DMK in Tiruvarur: Promises Tamil Nadu Free from ‘Family Rule’

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief and actor turned politician Vijay on Saturday launched a direct political challenge in the home turf of DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. He asserted that his party aims to build a Tamil Nadu without “family dominance.”

Speaking at a massive rally, Vijay addressed critics who say the large crowds at his events may not translate into votes. Engaging the audience, he asked, “Will you not vote? Is this an ’empty gathering’?” The crowd, mainly young men and women, responded with chants of “Vijay,” signaling their support.

Tiruvarur has been a DMK stronghold for over five decades, deeply rooted in the Dravidian movement’s ideology. The district also has areas influenced by Left parties. Historically, Tiruvarur, part of the former Thanjavur district, is the birthplace of the late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi (Thirukkuvalai), a key figure in Tamil Nadu politics.
